Senior Series - Madeleine Lincoln

I have been at Hawken my whole life, and one of the aspects of the experience that became a real part of my identity was my participation and dedication to athletics. Being on two high school sports teams as well as training in the weight room has pushed my mental, emotional, and physical wellness to new boundaries. I have run faster, jumped higher, and lifted more than I ever thought possible.

Field hockey and lacrosse did something even bigger for me than give me a positive athletic experience; it gave me two new teams and families that I will always cherish. Although all these experiences are very important to me, field hockey has had the most significant impact on my life.

I began playing field hockey in seventh grade, but it became even more real when I came into high school. The field hockey team gave me bonds, friendships, and a sisterhood that is indescribable, and you can only truly understand if you are a part of it. The team sleepover, ice cream runs, movie nights, early morning practices, and dress-up days are all just little moments among the bigger aspects of the experience. It is the harder moments that matter most. The unforgettable moments. The moments you give your blood, sweat, and tears for.

My sophomore year we reached the semifinal round of the playoffs versus Shaker. Such an even matchup and intense competition resulted in double overtime leading to strokes. It was tied, and all came down to one goal. Palms sweating, heart pounding, mind racing. When that final goal hit the backboard. There is truly no feeling like it. That is what you remember. That is what you give to your sport, to your team, and to yourself. So that when you step off the field that final time, you know you gave it everything that it is worth.
